David Hasselhoff Just Wants to Perform for Us

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

David Hasselhoff still feels a connection with the younger generation, even though his popular TV series “Baywatch” has been off the air for more than a decade.

“When Justin Bieber comes up and goes, ‘Hoff!’ and then Selena Gomez says, ‘It’s so weird he loves you,’ it’s great. It just means that you’re hip and it’s cool,” the 60-year-old actor said.

“Baywatch” aired from 1989 to 2000. Hasselhoff also starred in the TV series “Knight Rider,” which aired from 1982 to 1986.

To stay part of the conversation, Hasselhoff keeps busy and is always working. He recently starred in a Lifetime movie, “The Christmas Consultant,” opposite Caroline Rhea.

Hasselhoff talks about his various projects, his famous name and his hopes for a retro “Knight Rider” movie.

AP: Q. Would you ever want to do a full-time TV series again?

Hasselhoff: A. It depends what the series would be. I’ve been approached by some dear friends who run “The Office” and “Ugly Betty” about doing a sitcom, being a part of an ensemble. I’d love to do that. I’d love to bring back more than anything kind of like “Murder, She Wrote,” or there’s a great show in the U.K. called “Lovejoy,” or “Hart to Hart.” Some shows that have got some fun, a little tongue-and-cheek like Cary Grant, and play my age but still know that secretly (the character) is livin’ hard, livin’ fast and lovin’ it because that’s kind of where I’m at in my life.

AP: You can act, sing, perform on the stage and judge talent competitions. Why do you like variety?

Hasselhoff: I embrace everything. All I want to do is be onstage. A performer needs to perform. You need to work. I think that’s why I’ve lasted so long. I grew up watching “The Carol Burnett Show.” … People are now beginning to see that I do variety. I do sing. I did do Broadway and the West End.

AP: I’m sure you get a ton of offers. What do you say no to?

Hasselhoff: I say no to things that I can’t laugh with, where they’re laughing at me, and they’re trying to do something that is a little bit over-the-edge. If you don’t respect me, you’re not gonna get that respect back.

AP: Does it ever amaze you how your last name is so popular?

Hasselhoff: I think God has a sense of humor because they wanted me to change it. I was going to change it one time to David Michaels, but then I found out there was already a David Michaels. I took so much heat for the name Hasselhoff growing up, I’m gonna keep this name because I was proud of my parents. It’s kind of pathetic because Hasselhoff has turned into The Hoff and The Hoff is keeping Hasselhoff out of work but The Hoff’s paying the bills so I welcome The Hoff.

AP: There’s a “Knight Rider” movie in development. What can you say about it?

Hasselhoff: If you make the “Knight Rider” movie and you don’t make it retro and you don’t appeal to all the people that love the show, that grew up with it. If you don’t, it’s not gonna be “Knight Rider.” It will probably be a hit because “Knight Rider” is a great title, but it won’t be “Knight Rider.” It’s in the hands of a company, and hopefully I’ll meet with them and we’ll see what direction it’s going in.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Hasselhoff still feels a connection with the younger generation, even though his popular TV series “Baywatch” has been off the air for more than a decade.

“When Justin Bieber comes up and goes, ‘Hoff!’ and then Selena Gomez says, ‘It’s so weird he loves you,’ it’s great. It just means that you’re hip and it’s cool,” the 60-year-old actor said in a recent interview.

“Baywatch” aired from 1989 to 2000. Hasselhoff also starred in the TV series “Knight Rider,” which aired from 1982 to 1986.

To stay part of the conversation, Hasselhoff keeps busy and is always working. He stars in a Lifetime movie “The Christmas Consultant,” opposite Caroline Rhea, that airs Saturday (8 p.m. EST). He will tweet backstage for MTV at Sunday’s European Music Awards and play Captain Hook in a Peter Pan pantomime in December in Manchester, England.

David Hasselhoff Actually Has His Own KITT Car!

Monday, October 29th, 2012

The Hoff, David Hasselhoff is back on TV with his new holiday movie “The Christmas Consultant” premiering Saturday November 10th at 8 on Lifetime. Even though it’s been 26 years since his first hit show “Knight Rider” went off the air, many of the children of the 80s still know and love David best for cruising around in his talking car KITT wearing his sweet leather jacket and fighting bad buys.

So, how long has it been since he actually got behind the wheel of KITT and took him for a spin? “I have my own KITT car, which is now being chromed and I just drove it last Sunday. It was given to me as a gift from my staff for my 60th birthday,” David tells us. “I have the original dash and I have a lot of original stuff…we just put it all together.”

David Sixty, Sexy and in SA

David Hasselhoff and 'Baywatch' girls at the Avastar nightclub, where he will perform tomorrow when it hosts the Ultimate Baywatch Beach Party Picture: DANIEL BORN

For a 60-year-old, David Hasselhoff has quite a bit going for him – and he can still make women swoon, as was witnessed outside the Avastar nightclub in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg, where he will perform tomorrow night at the Ultimate Baywatch Beach Party.

The Hoff couldn’t help but shout “siyabonga” and “sawubona” at everybody in sight. He also believes Michael Knight, the 1980s TV star of Knight Rider, which made him famous, is bigger than James Bond will ever be.

Heck, one of his most memorable moments in South Africa was when he found Knight Rider bed sheets on sale while visiting this country with his father, Joe, 87.

Hasselhoff is still a major drawcard.

Just 20 minutes after The Times joined the club owners on a limousine ride to transport the Hoff from his Sandton hotel to the nightclub yesterday, his personal assistant, Nick Corjan, said he had just been booked to perform at the Sydney Opera House in January.

“Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself, thinking that perhaps I would have loved to be James Bond, I think: ‘Who cares?’, more people know about Michael Knight than about Bond,” said Hasselhoff

He said Baywatch’s Mitch Buchannon was “basically Knight Rider in a bathing suit”.

“Instead of a talking car, we had babes,” he said.

Hasselhoff was affable with the hotel staff and the four scantily dressed women who greeted him.

The media were asked not to quiz him about his past relationship with local star Patricia Lewis, or about his ex-wife, Pamela Bach, or alcohol.

The Hoff will be at the children in the cancer wards at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital today.

The Hoff is happy to do silly poses or run in slow motion with a bevy of babes on his arm .

“When I was in the UK recently I took pictures with girls in bathing suits and would run in slow motion, and all the papers – even though my shows are a big success there – had headlines saying: ‘Will you stop living in the past?’, and I would say: ‘Baby, you just fell right into it; you printed the picture’.”

Edinburgh Festival 2012: David Hasselhoff Interview

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

David Hasselhof at Venice Beach, California: 'Ninety nine per cent of people now call me The Hoff - and it's out of respect' Photo: JEFF JARVER/COLEMAN-RAYNER

David Hasselhoff, whose one-man show runs for a week at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, talks to Celia Walden of the Telegraph.

David Hasselhoff’s pet pig has made him late again. “I’m sorry,” exhales the TV star, sinking into a deckchair on the beachfront of a Santa Monica hotel. “He was stuck in the house scratching at the door asking to be let out. Then the water dragons needed feeding.”

Welcome to Hoff-world: an alternative universe where pot-bellied pigs govern schedules, conversations veer off on wild tangents and waitresses swoon like schoolgirls. It’s no surprise that the actor and singer turned talent show judge – who maintains his position in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most famous TV star on the planet – can’t stop smiling. “It’s fun,” he says when I ask whether it ever occurs to him that his life is ridiculous. “Isn’t it fun?” He turns the full, electrifying force of that smile onto his girlfriend, Hayley Roberts – a delicate-featured 31 year-old from Glynneath in Wales. It is, she concedes, fun.

Hayley must be doing something right. The 60 year-old, tanned and lean in blue jeans, an emerald green T-shirt and white jacket, is a different man from the one I first met four years ago, on the set of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. The manic, restless quality is still there behind the eyes, but a vicious optimism has replaced the torment. His talent-judging days may be over, but with a one-man show opening at the Leicester Square Theatre this month followed by a week-long run at the Edinburgh Festival, the Hoff is undergoing yet another resurgence.

“That’s what the show is about – my crazy journey. My whole life I’ve been like, woah!” he whoops. “Then, ‘Oh what happened?’ Woah! ‘Oh what happened?’”
