Interview: It’s Funny Playing David Hasselhoff

Sunday, July 1st, 2012
From: The Times of India

David Hasselhoff needs no introduction. This American actor made waves in India in the late 80s and the 90s with his stint, first in the hit TV series Knight Rider and then again, with Baywatch. Chennai Times gets chatting with the actor who will be appearing in a new film Piranha 3DD.

Can you tell us about your role inPiranha 3DD?
I play the role of David Hasselhoff. There was a lot of competition out there but I won the role! I took a little training to play David Hasselhoff. I’m very excited to play him. He is one of my favorite actors and all time hero; so to play him is kind of to live up to the expectation was a little nerve racking. But I think I pulled it off. I went into a deep trance, and every night I meditated, and I read David Hasselhoff’s book to try to find out who he was about.
It’s kind of the dark side of David Hasselhoff, and I enjoyed playing that and especially not wanting to rescue the ginger little moron kid. And not making any of the rescues — I just thought it was the funniest thing ever!

Aren’t you annoyed that your past few appearances in movies have been as a celebrity guest, mostly playing yourself?
I think it’s funny playing David Hasselhoff. And it works because I was able to play David Hasselhoff, and kind of get to the essence of him.

How was the experience shooting for the film?
It was amazing. The cast and crew were so creative. I got to take a piranha home with me. It’s in my house now. And it’s strange because every time I try to feed it, it’s pretty scary. I got a little blood in my eye once, but I kept going. I’m a hero! There were so many girls in such a good shape that it looked like Baywatch on steroids. It was living in 3D moment every time you go to the pool. It was distracting at times like, ‘Oh my God! What’s that?’ But it was more fun watching everyone in the pool get… eaten by the fish. And there was a lot of blood.

What’s next on the cards?
I’ve got a film in development called Jungle Brats, which is like Goonies. I’ve got a movie coming out called The Christmas Consultant. It’s really a big role. It’s the lead. So things are really turning around for me.

Would you ever consider doing a new Knight Rider Movie?
I’m actually looking to try to bring back Knight Rider.

Have you watched any Indian films before?
Does Slumdog Millionaire count? Yes, I have watched several.

What are your first thoughts when you hear India?
I think I could live off of Indian food! I love it all, especially the chicken korma! I would love to have any reason to come to India. I am ready to come to the India … so call me!

On the Set of Piranha 3DD

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

One of the bigger selling points of the sequel to the 2010 gore-fest that wasPiranha is the arrival of David Hasselhoff, an item that was not included with the “first” film (or second remake, technically). The promotions for Piranha 3DDhaven’t been shy in reminding us that The Hoff Is coming along for the ride this time around, and that includes this latest promotional video.

This featurette comes courtesy of iTunes and features David Hasselhoff giving us an eye-opening view of his trailer and mindset into being what he describes as a “semi-washed-up TV star/famous icon.” This apparently involves creepy eye-less masks and merchandising. It should be noted, however, that in addition to giving us a look at Hoff’s role in the film, there’s something potentially spoilery toward the end of the video, so watch on with that in mind!

Gotta love a Hoff with a sense of humor, right?

The slow-mo run and keyboard playing in the bedroom are moments we’ve seen previously, so while they’re moderate spoilers, especially when you consider how great it’ll likely be to see Hoff let loose his dormant life-guard during what could be a crucial point in during the mayhem, as all of those young water-park swimmers are being devoured by fish, what might be the bigger spoiler comes toward the end.

Hasselhoff points out that he gets to sing during the end credits. That in itself is a reasonably sized spoiler. And we get to see him running on the beach singing about being a fish hunter, which seems like a modified version of the “Love Hunter” song he’s singing during the keyboard scene. So does this mean Hoff’s the hero of Piranha 3DD? Or at the very least, that he survives at the end? Seems like a reasonable bit of speculation, at the very least.

We’ll have to wait and see how things turn out for Hoff and the rest of the characters when Piranha 3DD arrives in theaters June 1.

Piranha 3DD US Spring Release Date Likely, DVD in the UK

    Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

In October, Dimension released the teaser trailer for Piranha 3DD, just a week after the studio moved the movie from its November 23rd opening for an unspecified 2012 release date.

In the intervening months, however, no new date for Piranha 3DD had been announced. Until now. Digital Spy (via The Playlist) recently reported that Piranha 3DDwould be released on DVD in the UK in March, a move that appeared to damn a theatrical release. With a DVD release only two and a half months away, would Dimension have enough time to mount a promotional campaign for Piranha 3DD?Shock Till You Drop turned to director John Gulager (Feast) for answers, and the director responded with an email that explained what was happening with Piranha 3DD.

I’m really glad that people are interested in the progress of Piranha 3DD. I can tell you that at 6:30 pm on December 19th, my birthday, the sound mixing forPiranha 3DD was done and the film was finished. The plan is to come to theaters this Spring in 3D(D)!

The original November release date was made before we started filming. As [co-screenwriter] [Patrick] Melton says, “…the Thanksgiving release was always overly optimistic.” Ha, ha, that’s a good way of putting it! The main problem was this thing called Winter. There was no way we could ask anyone to strip down and jump into the water. Besides being inhumane and stupid, even with ‘movie magic’, it would be too dangerous. So we waited until it was warm enough to shoot but not so late that our main location became unavailable (open to the public) and started shooting in real 3D on April 25th, 2011.

We released a short teaser trailer on the Spike Awards in October to give a taste of what’s in store but had to let go of the November theatrical date. The film just wasn’t totally finished. When that happened any planned releases around the world had to be scrapped and reset because Piranha 3DD must be released here, in the US, first. I think this is a Spring film anyways.

Gulager also mentioned that a November test screening was a success, but still did not mention a release date for the movie. Still, Melton confirmed to Daily Dead that a Spring theatrical release was likely ”because of the ‘Spring Break vibe’ in the film, spring was the obvious time to open it.”
